THEY thought they had seen the back of Gordon Ramsay.
But the TV chef was back at Silversmiths restaurant in Sheffield city centre this week, four months after knocking the business into shape as part of his Kitchen Nightmares series.

Owners Justin Rowntree and Donna Shaw were thrilled to discover their restaurant had been chosen by Gordon for an additional item about how to make it through the credit crunch.

His message was that independent restaurants should be prepared to compete head on with the corporate chains and that customers should support their local restaurants.

Gordon supervised a lunchtime taste test in Leopold Square with a fresh, homemade Silversmiths venison pie with mustard mash at £8.50, competing with similarly priced dishes from some of the restaurants in the square.

Justin said it was a "hands down win" for the Silversmiths pie, which used venison from Round Green venison farm in Barnsley.

As Justin gathered the crowds, Gordon and Donna handed out T-shirts proclaiming "Your Local Restaurant Needs You".

The celebrity chef first came to the Arundel Street restaurant in July to give it the Kitchen Nightmares treatment. As usual he returned to see how they had fared – but then surprised the owner by dropping in again on Monday.

"We thought we'd never see him again," said Justin. "He has never gone to a restaurant for a third time.

"It was absolutely fantastic. We had no idea what he was going to do."

It turned out to be "a complete roller coaster of a day", added Justin. "Expect the unexpected and he delivers…

"He spent four or five hours cooking in the kitchen and me and Donna got a masterclass in making a venison pie. We'll take these memories to the grave…"

The latest visit has encouraged Silversmiths to start a regular Pie Night from January with a different homemade offering every time costing £8.50.

Meanwhile the Kitchen Nightmares featuring Silversmiths is due to be shown on Channel 4 towards the end of January.
