Too many chefs in the kitchen?
Maybe if instead of calling the show "Kitchen Nightmares" Fox Network named it "Extreme Restaurant Makeover," there wouldn't be so much trouble finding volunteers.
Not many local restaurants have jumped at the chance to be helped by Chef Gordon Ramsay. Perhaps they've only seen Ramsay's screaming fits on his other show, "Hell's Kitchen," in which he cuts a bunch of chefs into tiny little pieces.
"It's a tough show to cast," concedes Kurt Tovey, creative services director at WXIN . Ramsay's fiery persona is less volatile in this series, Tovey said, with the chef's blunt approach focused only on saving the failing restaurant.
A struggling restaurant owner might want to consider applying, said Tony Hanslits, director of culinary education at The Chef's Academy, a division of Indiana Business College.
Hanslits has seen the show, respects Ramsay's expertise and knows that asking for help is not easy for a chef.
"You have to suck in the pride," said Hanslits, who added he would have appreciated some advice when his restaurant in Broad Ripple, Tavola di Tosa, was struggling to get customers in the door.
"I would have enjoyed seeing what he had to say."
Restaurant owners interested in getting on the show can call (310) 387-6775 or e-mail foxtvkitchen@gmail .com. Put "Indianapolis" in the subject line.
Tovey said the casting director will be in town next month if any local restaurants make the cut.
