17 December 2008
Adventurous travellers with strong stomachs and a taste for unusual food can head to Reykjavik next year for the Thorrablot midwinter feast.
One of the unusual options on offer during this event, dedicated to traditional Viking foods, is hakarl – a rotten shark dish that famously caused Gordon Ramsay to vomit on his television show The F Word.Visitors will also be able to join Icelandic locals in trying boiled sheep''s head and congealed sheep''s blood wrapped in a ram''s stomach.
These interesting meals can be washed down with a shot of Brennivin, or "black death" – a particularly potent variety of schnapps.
The Thorrablot festival will take place between January 25th and February 23rd and will see a number of eateries in Reykjavik, including Restaurant Reykjavik and Mulakaffi, get involved by adding unusual dishes to their menus.
Visitors to Reykjavik will also be entertained by music, games and storytelling events that will continue into the early hours of the morning.
