CELEBRITY Chef Gordon Ramsay learned the good old Aussie slang of DTs and budgie smugglers when he hit the surf at Main Beach yesterday.

Taking a break from the kitchen, Ramsay and mate Stuart Gillies teamed up with 1st Wave Surf School owner and surf instructor Brad Conroy for their first surf in Australia.

Before hitting the waves Ramsay checked out the swell and said 'it looked a bit small'. He also decided it was a little too cold for DTs, when he learned the real meaning.

Unafraid of the fact there were 'white pointers swimming the Australia coastline', Ramsay and Gillies had a quick lesson on the sand before they took to the water and initially struggled to find their feet.

Although it was Gillies' first time in the water he picked up the technique fairly quickly, while Ramsay who has had lessons in Los Angeles, took a bit longer to get the hang of it.

Mr Conroy said Ramsay did not behave in the way he had been portrayed in the media recently.

"It was just like two normal dudes rocking up to have a surf," he said.

"They were really relaxed and easy going."

Ramsay said he had been surprised by how powerful and big the waves really were.

"This was the first time he had surfed in Australia and he was surprised how nice the water was," said Mr Conroy.

"He had a ball but was taken aback by how strong the waves could get and the fact that once you get out there, it's actually a lot bigger than it looks from the beach."

Mr Conroy said by the end of the two-hour session Ramsay was able to get to his feet.

"He said his size 15 feet were getting caught in the leg rope," he said.

"I think the size of the board was also a little heavy on the lower tide which made it a bit harder for him."

Ramsay mentioned he was keen to have another surf during his stay on the Gold Coast.
