Barack Obama had a star-studded audience in fits of laughter as he wisecracked his way through a charity dinner at the White House.

The US president delighted celebrity diners such Gordon Ramsay, Sting, Demi Moore and husband Ashton Kutcher with a speech peppered with daring jokes poking fun at himself, wife Michelle and even Hillary Clinton.

Addressing the hype over his first 100 days in office at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner the American leader said: "I believe my next 100 days will be so successful, I will be able to complete them in 72 days – and on the 73rd day I will rest".

He went on to blame his daughters for the New York flyover that sparked fears of a 9/11-style incident, saying: "Sasha and Malia aren't here tonight because they're grounded. You can't just take Air Force One on a joyride to Manhattan – I don't care whose kids you are."

From there he went on to joke that Secretary of State Hillary, a former rival for the presidency, and now his top diplomat, tried to give him swine fever. "These days we couldn't be closer. The minute she got back from Mexico, she pulled me into a hug and said I should go down there myself!"

Michelle got in on the fun, too, flexing her arm muscles in response to a quip about the controversy over her habit of wearing sleeveless dresses. The First Lady was on a campaign for the "right to bare arms" joked her husband.

Other guests enjoying the lighthearted atmosphere included Tom Cruise and wife Katie Holmes, Eva Longoria Parker, Samuel L Jackson and Natalie Portman.

Did he really say that?   Could he have joked about the terror that so many went through...somebody please tell me our President did not say that...
