If you are headed to New Smyrna Beach for summer fun, there are a few newcomers to the dining scene and some old favorites in new locations you may have overlooked in your rush to get a primo spot on the beach.

For a sampling of surfside fare, cruise historic Canal Street. Then turn right onto Riverside Drive and follow the north causeway to Flagler Avenue. Head south on Peninsula Avenue, turn left onto Third Avenue (State Road 44) and the road gently curves into A1A.

Jason's Corner (135 Canal St., 386-424-9878) serves up a fresh approach to breakfast, lunch and dinner in an appropriately casual setting. Early risers will find the usual egg and grits offerings as well as breakfast pitas and fresh-baked muffins. For lunch, their Cuban ($6.49) is a treat.

Little Drug Co. (412 Canal St., 386-428-9041) is a nostalgic throwback with an old-fashioned soda fountain and restaurant. Juicy burgers and thick malts are a must.

Love Muffins Bakery (112 Sams Ave., just off Canal Street; 386-426-2205) was formerly Wards Bakery & Downtown Bread & Bytes. Check it out from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday and 7 a.m.-noon Saturday for fresh artisan breads and pastries.

Dolphin View (107 N. Riverside Drive, 386-402-8859) is in the space formerly occupied by Sea Harvest. Customers still get the huge portions that made Sea Harvest a local favorite, and there's more emphasis on Florida seafood. The large outside covered pavilion with ample seating is a great addition.

Atlantis Bistro & Wines by the Waves (300 Flagler Ave., 386-428-4022) is a cozy Mediterranean bistro with a decent selection of wines and beer. Lunch and dinner is served daily except Monday.

Clancy's Cantina is moving from its longtime location in the Indian River Shopping Village to 301 Flagler Ave. (386-428-4500). The menu melds Mexican, Florida and Caribbean culinary concepts, and the margaritas are fab. The new location opens June 12.

Manzano Fine Foods (311 Flagler Ave., 386-402-4981) is the neighborhood newbie. Open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily, it has an excellent selection of gourmet groceries including cheeses, olive oils, condiments, desserts by the slice, and breads. There's a small deli section, too, with aged beef, sausages and cured meats. It's a must-stop for folks cooking in their weekend condos or anyone looking for a quick bite to eat in or take out.

Flip Flops Chill & Grill was recently thrust into the national spotlight when former chef Danny Veltri won Hell's Kitchen. It has moved out of its small digs on Pine Street off Flagler Avenue to the old Shell's restaurant location at 725 E. Third Ave. (in front of the beachside Publix). The menu has expanded, and reality-show fans still are flocking in to see where the talented Veltri started his career.

Of course, The Breakers (where Flagler meets the ocean) is still serving some of the best burgers in Central Florida, and it's hard to beat a few cold brews and a fish sandwich at JB's Fishcamp (859 Pompano Ave., 7 miles south of The Islander) between the beach and river on south A1A.

Good food and a little sand between your toes makes for a fine summer day.
